Biography

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii but raised and educated in Chicago. I have lived all over the United States because of my affiliation with the airline industry and my husband’s military and federal government employment.

We moved to Torrance about 18 years ago after a 3 year tour of duty in Washington, DC. We liked Torrance because of its cultural diversity and prudent government management.

In the course of my 40 year airline career I have worked in flight service, international marketing, sales, group and tour development, purchasing, training, and finance.

After I was offered an early retirement from American Airlines in 2005, I began a new career as a fee based Registered Financial Consultant to the senior community for PFS Investments. I am currently semi-retired and continue to serve my clients.

In 2008 I became interested in taking a more active role in the senior community through a City Commission and I took the Torrance City Commissioner Certification training. In February, 2009 I was appointed to the Torrance Commission on Aging. Within 2 months, I was elected Chair of the Commission and served in that role for 4 years. In 2013 I was reappointed to another term and served as the Vice Chair of the Commission for 2 years. During my tenure I became the Commission spokesperson to City Council advocating for senior housing, transportation, healthcare, and senior programs.

In 2009 I served on the Strategic Planning Committee for Transit and helped set up the key performance indicators to measure the progress on the objectives set forth in the City strategic plan of 2008. I communicate regularly with the Transit Department in order to keep abreast of developments in Transportation changes and enhancements. I have appeared at hearings on the Green Line extension and both Metro and Torrance Transit bus route changes. I have worked with the Transit Department in negotiating the Dial-A-Ride Taxi Program updates. I am especially interested in the successful implementation of the new transit center and making sure that Torrance is the lawful recipient of Measure R Funds.

In 2009 and 2010 I served on the Torrance 2010 Census Complete Committee and helped to promote the Census at community fairs and did outreach to businesses to educate their employees on the importance of filling out the Census form.

I volunteer in many community activities and have a great relationship with both the Police and Fire Departments because of my involvement with CERT. I have worked at the Torrance Firefighters Spaghetti Dinner, participated in City and Torrance Memorial Hospital Disaster Drills, and performed traffic control and first aid duties for the Police department at Flu Clinics, the B-17 Bomber Display, The Armed Forces Day displays, the 4th of July Celebration, and various other events. I also attended the Partners in Policing program.

I have attended the South Bay Cities Council of Governments Annual General Assembly Meetings for the past two years. I also serve on the South Bay Cities Council of Governments Working Group for Senior Services.

I am a member of the Torrance Chamber of Commerce and attend and participate in the Government Affairs Program (GAP) and Tech Pros. I am also a graduate of the 2013 Leadership Torrance Program. Our project was the development of the mobile Discover Torrance application. I will be representing Torrance in Washington, DC and Sacramento to discuss ways to enhance economic growth through transportation, job creation, and small business development. I am actively pursuing and recruiting new businesses to come to Torrance.

I have been a participant in three Metropolitan Water District Inspection trips to the Colorado River Aqueduct, the Diamond Valley Lake Reservoir, and the State Water Project and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in order to learn more about the water resources for Torrance.

Torrance has a large aging community. The median age of the population is 45. I believe the City Council needs to have someone who has a focus on the senior population yet has strong roots in the business community.

I try to attend every City Council meeting and workshop to keep abreast on City Government.

I look forward to continuing to serve my community.
