I am a life-long dyed-in-the-wool Liberal/Progressive Democrat who truly believes in Health Care for All, Progressive Taxation, Good and Affordable Public Education, Women's Right to Choose, Marriage Equality, Workers' Rights and Unions, and many other Progressive values. Following in my activist mother's footstep, I have helped Democratic candidates and causes on their campaigns for many years starting in 1972 when I walked precincts with the College Democrats for Presidential candidate George McGovern.

I have been active in the Sacramento Democratic Party for many years as an Associate Member, and I have attended the California Democratic Convention for the last nine years - first as a volunteer, then as a Proxy, and then as an elected Delegate.  I am the founder and current President of the Brownie Mary Demcrats of Sacramento Country, and I am also a member of several of the other local Democratic clubs including Women Democrats and Wellstone Democrats of Sacramento County.

Political Philosophy

In recent years, my focus has been to help end the failed "War on Drugs". I believe that non-violent and victimless drug "offenders" should NOT be imprisoned. If someone has a problem with drugs - of any nature, legal or illegal (including alcohol and prescription medications), treat them through the Public and Mental Health Systems. By using the Criminal Justice system to address drug issues, we are filling up our prisons. In turn, we are ruining many young lives - particularly if they happen to be black, brown, and/or poor. Marijuana/Cannabis, which is used both medically, spiritually, and socially around the world, is the "supposed" major reason for a large proportion of these incarcerations.

The "War on Drugs" has failed miserably. More people on the planet use more drugs now than ever before in history. And the drug cartels are reaping the benefits because of the illegality of these drugs. Let's change our policies so that we, eventually, decriminalize all drugs. It works in other countries from the Netherlands to Uruguay. Even Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary General, says the war on drugs has been "devastating". He calls for decriminalization of drugs around the world. Let's build a kinder, gentler nation that treats drug users humanely and compassionately instead of putting them in prisons.
