Biography

I have been a resident and community member of Sacramento since the age of thirteen and for over 18 years I have called Citrus Heights, Orangevale and Fair Oaks my home. My family and I are strongly invested in our community and understand the issues families and students deal with from an academic perspective growing up in Trustee Area 4 of the Sacramento County Board of Education (SCBOE).

I’m a product of the public education system and as a parent I want my children’s learning experience to be one that is rewarding and engaging.

As a teenage mother, I truly value the education I struggled to earn and receive. I recognize the opportunities a good education can provide in building a career, personal development, and in helping build better communities.

My educational pathway had me earn an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from American River College. I was able to take my two great passions for learning and helping others into the marketplace assisting families with their goal of homeownership as a client service professional in the real estate industry and in the retirement field helping seniors further their portfolios to increase their standard of living.

But as my family grew from one child to four children, I knew I had to make time to be involved in their development. I soon focused my efforts on their education and became an active parent in their schooling by volunteering time to help with their academic achievements. Soon I found myself serving as a Trustee on the Golden Valley Educational Foundation, which supports the Golden Valley Public Charter Schools in Orangevale, Ca.

It wasn’t long before I transitioned to become a board member with Golden Valley Public Charter Schools. For the past three years I have overseen the school’s budget, taken the lead on policy recommendations and changes, and been accountable for hiring decisions.

My true passion was realized; serving families and students and enriching their lives through high performing academic programs. I began working for the California Charter Schools Association where I have worked to serve the needs of students and their parents in the San Juan, Natomas, and Washington Unified school districts as a statewide trainer preparing others like myself to work with families across the state.

My training has helped families become more engaged in the education system and learning process through advocacy training to benefit their children at the local district level and lobbying elected officials at the State Capitol for quality education.

In 2014, I was awarded the Hart Vision Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of my contributions to the local school community.

Now I want to further my work by running as a candidate for the District 4 Trustee seat on the Sacramento County Board of Education. Increasing a student’s capacity to learn in a safe and welcoming environment is a priority and bringing the resources to our schools and teachers to make that a reality is a must.

I would be honored to serve the families of the Fourth District and respectfully ask for your vote on June 7, 2016.

Sincerely,

Joanne Ahola
