My Top 3 Priorities

  • Strengthening our local economy: The economic renaissance downtown is important, but it’s only a start. I will make Sacramento business friendly, diversify our economy, attract high-wage employers and help local businesses grow.
  • Addressing homelessness: I have a plan to leverage state mental health funding to build permanent supportive housing in Sacramento to help people end the cycle of homelessness for good.
  • Investing in our youth: I will push for preschool opportunity for every 4-year-old in Sacramento and expansion of after-school programs. I will connect high schools and businesses to get youth the training for 21st century careers.

Experience

Biography

Darrell Steinberg is one of Sacramento’s most accomplished public officials, serving our community for over 20 years.

As a young man, Steinberg bought his first home in Tahoe Park, where he and his wife Julie started their family. When Tahoe Park was having trouble with gangs and crime, neighbors formed the Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association and elected Darrell as the first President.

Darrell was soon elected to the Sacramento City Council, where he focused on making neighborhoods safe, creating good jobs and providing quality after-school programs.  Steinberg founded Sacramento START, a program to help kids in our most challenged schools improve their test scores.

Darrell later served in the State Assembly and then State Senate, becoming the first Sacramentan to serve as President of the Senate in over 125 years.

As the Senate leader, Darrell got things done by building coalitions to deliver real results.  For his bi-partisan leadership in bringing the state back to fiscal solvency during the recession, Steinberg received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, the Pulitzer Prize equivalent of public service.

Steinberg has been heralded by mental health advocates as the “most transformative figure mental health leader in California history” for his work in writing and passing the Mental Health Services Act, which gets people off the street and into healthcare.

As a state legislator, Steinberg championed economic development, building sustainable communities and major investments in healthcare and education. His work brought millions of dollars to Sacramento area schools to connect high school students to 21st century careers.

Darrell Steinberg and his wife, Julie, have two children Jordana, 22 and Ari, 19.
