Biography

Gustavo’s passion for public service comes from his mother. At the age of 16, she came to Salinas, Ca. from Mexico and worked the fields to provide a better life for her family. She taught Gustavo the importance of responsibility, fighting injustice, and instilled in him how important education is, helping him to attend community college.

Gustavo began helping his community as a volunteer with the YMCA in Los Angeles, where he started the Saturday late night program to give at-risk youth activities in a safe place, away from gang activities while attending college. Eventually he graduated with his Masters’ degree in Social Work from Sacramento State University and started working with El Concilio in Stockton, providing mental health services to the most vulnerable among us - the undocumented, victims of abuse and violent crime.

Gustavo knew he could do more to affect positive change in Stockton, the city he had fallen in love with. He joined then Stockton City Councilmember Susan Eggman’s team to work on policy issues and worked his way to Legislative Director for now Assemblymember Susan Eggman’s office. Gustavo has worked tirelessly on behalf San Joaquin County residents, fighting for additional funds for grants for students to go to local colleges, tax credits for farmers, protecting our water and creating local jobs.

Gustavo lives in Central Stockton with his wife, Dyane Burgos Medina, and will continue working diligently on behalf of San Joaquin County to make sure everyone has access to a growing economy. He’s running for Supervisor in San Joaquin’s first district because the County needs strong, hard-working and smart leadership to fight for San Joaquin. His top priorities will be: public safety, protection of our water, and economic development of the region.
