While at UCD, Alan met his wife, Lia, a ‘Davis girl’ who attended Davis public schools from preschool through college. They graduated from UCD in 1997, but Lia still sometimes jokes that Alan is new to the community. After college, Alan earned his law degree and worked as an attorney and policy advocate specializing in the legislative process and governmental affairs. Today, Alan is the Executive of a non-profit corporation relating to finance and local government.

The son of Dennis and Linda Fernandes, also of Davis, Alan grew up in the Bay Area attending public school. His family moved to Sacramento in his teenage years where he eventually graduated from Christian Brothers High School, a school whose motto ‘Enter to Learn; Leave to Serve’ made an indelible impression on him. Alan began serving and giving back to Christian Brothers by coaching the High School Freshman Baseball Team, as well as many Moot Court Teams, leading one team to a first place finish. He participated in the Judge Gordon D. Schaber High School Law Program and Moot Court Competition on behalf of Christian Brothers as both an attorney coach and judge.
