Experience

Biography

Valerie Amezcua has served our community as an education advocate, a parent, a Santa Ana City Commissioner and a Supervising Probation Officer.

She retired on September 1,2017 as a Supervising Probation Officer for the Orange County Probation Department where she started her career January 1987. During her public service career of 30 years, she has had an array of assignments that included Gang Suppression, Tri-Agency Regional Gang Enforcement, Gang Prevention/Intervention for the County Islands Program, Supervisor for the Youth Reporting Center in Santa Ana, which included partnerships with the Dept. of Education and numerous non-profit agencies.  At the time of her retirement she was assigned to the AB109 Prison Realignment Division. She has an extensive background in the area of Domestic Violence, Sex Crimes, Organized Crime and has spent hundreds of hours training in these areas.      

Valerie has extensive experience in community-based juvenile justice reform, gang prevention and intervention, implementing and training in the area of Restorative Justice and is a Certified Peace Mediator. She continues to advocate for incarcerated youth and assist in development of trainings, alternative options for incarceration and bridging relationships with community partners. 

As a Board Member and current President, she has played a key role in the expansion of Mental Health services throughout the district, recognized the need for SAUSD Police Officers to be given additional training to work with the students and community in a positive manner, she has worked tirelessly to address school safety issues and she supports providing each school site with the tools needed to ensure our students success.

She remains active within the community, previously serving on numerous boards and commissions, including the Human Relations Commission and the Early Prevention & Intervention Commission (EPIC) for the City of Santa Ana. She attended California State University, Long Beach and is the proud mother of Mickel Melendrez.

Valerie was recognized as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People of 2017 for her work on the Santa Ana Unified School Board of Education. She has received numerous recognitions for her work and dedication for the community, including LULAC Woman of the Year, Congressional Recognition and Women of Distinction award.
