Candidate Statement

Summary

This position paper will explain my reason for seeking re-election and share my views on current accomplishsments.

I’m seeking re-election because I love the responsibility of representing you as, together, we educate our youth

I earned a B.A. in Sociology from Principia College in Illinois. I hold a teaching and specialty credential in early childhood education. I had the privilege of serving the families of Fountain Valley School District for 39 years in Kindergarten, first grade and as a reading specialist. Nine years ago, I retired.

I’m a wife, mom to three grown children and grandmother to four, all of whom attend our wonderful schools.  I volunteer in the community, at church, in our classrooms and do committee work on behalf of the board.

During my 8 years as a board member, I’ve attended all board meetings, studied agendas, asked questions and helped to make sound decisions.

Recently, we’ve invested funds from our surplus school sites in a laddered portfolio, sold a commercial office building, leased office space in this building ... all of which are generating additional revenue.

Being fiscally responsible, we have a healthy long-term budget plan. We maintain a reserve, are dedicating funds for deterred maintenance and have given reasonable compensation increases to all employees

We’ve dedicated one-time monies to increase technology infrastructure and devices.

With great trust in our ability to deliver on time and within budget, you approved a general obligation bond to install air-conditioning and modernize our schools.  We’re doing just that.

We’ve supported teachers with elite professional development so they can deliver best first-instruction.  Students are thriving with year-over-year increases in ELA and math.

I have a strong working knowledge of education in general and our district in particular.

Schools are about student success.  I understand the keys to facilitating that success:  high-quality teachers, strong school leadership, high expectations, ongoing assessment, environments conducive to learning, rigorous core curriculum, engaging technology and the arts, motivated students and parent involvement.

My premise as a trustee is simple:  hold to the vision and set priorities which support people and practices which advance student learning so all children have opportunities for a high-quality education.

I, like you, have a vested interest in our district.  A high quality education has long term effects - an individual’s earning potential is greater, access to resources increase, health is better and overall happiness increases.  Our community benefits from quality schools and an educated population. Crime rates decrease, property values increase and volunteerism rises.

My priority remains to hold to the vision which supports high quality education, delivered by dedicated, effective teachers, inspired by strong leaders, resulting in advancing student learning.  This will be the foundation for decisions I will make.

I will continue to thoroughly study the issues, listen with an open mind to all viewpoints, entertain well researched ideas, ask questions and serve with integrity and honor.

I hope I have earned your trust to continue to work on your behalf.

Vote for me and you’ll be supporting quality education our children and community deserve.  Thank you.
