Biography

Hello, my name is Jose Medrano and I am a candidate for the La Habra City Council. I’m reaching out today to neighbors, friends and everyone who loves our city to bring new leadership and a vision that includes everyone in our community.

I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a Mexican immigrant born in Tecate, Mexico. I came to the United States with my parents who were also born in Mexico. At the age of 15 I became a naturalized United States Citizen. I grew up in the neighboring city of Norwalk. I attended St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs and later graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a BA in Business Administration.

I have been married 20 years to my beautiful wife Ally. She is an Attorney for the United States Government.  We have 3 daughters who have attended Macy School, Rancho Starbuck and La Habra High School.  We have resided in La Habra for over 19 years.  As a resident of La Habra I have been active in our community through youth sports.  I have volunteered my time as a soccer and softball coach to many of our La Habra youth. I served as an AYSO executive board member and on the La Habra Girls Softball executive board.

The experiences my family and I have had as La Habra residents for 19 years, in addition to the strong work ethic and commitment to community my parents instilled in my siblings and I, motivated me to take the next step and run for CityCouncil.

Through my own experiences, I have come to realize the need for structured youth mentorship and apprentice programs. At the age of 11 I was working as a paperboy delivering LA Herald Examiner newspapers to customers in my neighborhood on my bike.   I worked for UPS while attending college. The job made it possible for me to pay my own college tuition. Many of the jobs I was able to get when I was young no longer exist. The City must be proactive as partners with our schools, industry and Chamber of Commerce to create these opportunities.

Other priorities of mine include safe neighborhoods and schools with robust law enforcement supporting community neighborhood watch volunteers. I envision it as part of an overall comprehensive community policing effort. I have over 23 years of law enforcement experience.

In 1995, I worked as a City of Norwalk public safety officer and in 1996 until 2004, I served as a City of Pasadena Police Officer and Vice Narcotics Detective.  As a Norwalk public safety officer, I worked with local businesses in launching Norwalk’s 1st“Business Watch” program. The program engaged local business owners to join the City in identifying and reporting crime and vagrancy within the City’s commercial districts. The Business Watch program increased public safety, encouraged patron shopping and boosted the local economy. The City of Norwalk won a National Award for the innovative efforts of the Public Safety Department with Business Watch receiving a significant portion of the recognition.

Opioids from Vicodin to heroin are killing more and more people every day. I have some specific ideas to address the problem in our community. As a police officer and detective, I investigated a multitude of crimes including narcotics. I fought to keep the community and local schools safe for residents and students alike.

Since 2004 I have been employed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office as a Senior Investigator.  I am currently a detective investigating Human Trafficking crimes on the Los Angeles County Regional Human Trafficking Task Force.  While combating Human Trafficking I have helped young girls and woman escape the scourge of modern day slavery and assisted in the prosecution of traffickers.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, running, mountain biking, and swimming. Please join with me in making La Habra a better place to live and work! On November 6thVote Medrano for La Habra City Council!
