Biography

I was born in Santa Maria and have lived in Santa Barbara County my whole life, graduating from Santa Maria High School in 2004 and from UCSB in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Sociology and a minor in Education.

I have dedicated the last 10 years of my life to public service in Santa Barbara County – both as a community organizer and as a legislative assistant.

I currently serve as Chief of Staff for Santa Barbara County First District Supervisor Das Williams and previously served as District Director for California’s 37th Assembly District. Over the last eight years, I have worked extensively on education policy for K-12, community college, and the state university levels.

While working in the State Assembly office, I worked closely with SBCC leadership and local stakeholders to begin the conversation about building dedicated student housing on and around campus. In addition, I worked with SBCC to implement State goals designed to improve community college student completion, which resulted in opening up more summer courses for students. It was in this role that I developed a deep appreciation for the challenges that our community colleges face, the importance of engaging with school and community college districts to ensure state policy is meeting their students’ needs.

In addition to my policy work, I am a committed community organizer who believes that the best way to solve problems is to engage with and listen to those who are being affected. For 2 1/2 years, I facilitated the community effort to establish local governance in Isla Vista, which resulted in the creation of the Isla Vista Community Services District. In addition, I am on the steering committee for the Santa Barbara Progressive Coalition, where I help channel budding community activists who are energized by the results of the 2016 election, into local efforts.
