Preguntas de League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (1)

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools.  What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?
Respuesta de Ronald Elwyn Thomas, Jr.:

I have been a participant in the review of the LCAP for the prior two years.  I have also attended California School Board Association training sessions to better understand the law.  In addition I have been a member of the 41st Assembly District Educational Advisory Board, where I have made significant contacts with those who write and vote for these laws.

Transparency the Key to Accountibility

Summary

Following the Brown Act for public disclosure and Board Policies are key to a Board that is responsive and accountible to the public

I will work to ensure that the requirements of the Brown Act and key school policies such as BP 9005(a) Board-Superintendent Protocols will be followed.  Transparency and Accountability are critical and I will see that all items of interest to the public are put forward on the agenda.  I believe in this community and it's desire to be a meaningful part of the education of our students.

Mt Baldy a unique school environment is being transformed into the mediocrity of other schools

Summary

Mt Baldy is a small school, yet the current leadership has all but removed the advantages of a small school in favor of making our school like all other schools

Mt Baldy School has been a unique and successful school by combining the educational excellance of highly qualified teachers and accessing the talent and availability of resources in our mountain community.

Since the last election we have seen many of the advantages of our school removed.  Highly successful community building "Monday Morning Meetings" have been eliminated.  These meetings allowed our entire school to be one community, now we are separated by class levels.  Monday morning meetings led by the students facilitated the development of leadership skills and lessoned the fear of public speaking.  The track team which promoted healthy life syles and stength and conditioning for other sports activities has been eliminated; unfounded fears of litigation have been used to base the eliination of this program.

The current leadership has stated and argued that we did not need "Classroom Instructional Aids" because no one else had them.  This justification is not only demonstrably incorrect, but who would decrease a benefit for our children because others do not have it?  Financial justification, "We can not afford it" has also been shown to be a false basis for eliminationg this benefit, since the budget for classified employees has actually increased since this 'budget saving' change was made.
