Biography

I am currently the Chief of Staff for Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan and former Policy Director to San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim where over the past several years, I have been able to successfully develop policies with community, department heads, and elected officials to:

·       fast-track affordable housing construction, middle income housing, and accessory dwelling units

·       protect our privacy rights from overuse of surveillance technology

·       strengthen and support citizen oversight of law enforcement so that it serves all of us equally

·       save restorative justice programs at OUSD

·       advocate for just and efficient transit and protected bike lanes

·       protect and sustain LGBT historic sites and neighborhoods

·       build homeless navigation centers

·       strengthen prevailing wage

·       create and fund safe routes to school

·       establish the first free community college program in the country

I have been active in the Democratic Party for over a decade. I co-founded the San Francisco Latino Democratic Club, served as the vice-president of the historic Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, and many of you previously voted for me to be an Assembly Delegate to the state convention.

Prior to working in government, I was an advocate for special needs children and children facing suspensions in the San Francisco public school system.  I also worked with residents in Single Occupancy Hotels and in apartment buildings in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco to bring about better living conditions and founded a program called La Voz Latina to support Latino immigrants.

I was raised with a strong set of social justice values.  My parents both were involved in the Student Movement in Mexico in 1968.  I immigrated to this country due to an 8.1 earthquake in Mexico City that devastated my community, and have called the beautiful bay area home since 2001.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

I consider myself a pragmatic progressive.  My work is values driven and rooted in decades of experience within the community but I also understand the need to work with those who have a different set of beliefs than mine, and think it healthy to engage in political discourse and dialogue.
